Singapore School Lunch - Mushroom Spaghetti

Country: Singapore

Contents: Mushroom spaghetti, chicken chop and potato wedges.

Notes: "As you can see, it's easy to choose an unbalanced meal despite all the healthful choices available. Perhaps the school should consider deploying a food colour police?"

I think a great point is raised here. Just because good food is provided doesn't mean it will be eaten. There also has to be education and support of healthy choices at home.

Singapore School Lunch - Fried Anchovies

Notes: "In Singapore, the school canteen consists of several stalls selling different types of food, run by different individuals. It's rather like a mini foodcourt. Students are free to purchase anything they fancy. There are national guidelines in place to ensure that the food is healthful. Some schools go the extra mile - they ban deep-fried food and processed meats.

I say all these to explain my husband's hodge-podge lunch. As a hungry visitor, this is what he had:

At the Muslim food stall, he bought a plate of fried rice with three sides - crispy fried anchovies, omelette and cabbage stir-fry with tomato and beansprouts - for $2.

He walked his plate over to the Western food stall, bought Chicken Chop - minus the trimmings - for $1. He notes that the chicken is skinless.

Then, he walked over to the Snack stall and bought 2 pieces of Garlic Bread for $1. The Garlic Bread never made it into the picture."

Notes: "This meal was purchased in a primary school for $2 (about USD 1.50). This is an 'upsized' portion. The regular student portion probably has one piece of chicken and cost $1.50 (USD 1.15)."
