Czech Republic School Lunch - Pea Soup

Country: Czech Republic

Contents:  Pea soup, beans with tomato sauce, an apple, and two slices of typical Czech wheat and rye bread.

Source: S.K.

Notes: At first I thought, gross, beans with tomatoe sauce. But then I thought, well, that's all baked beans and chili are. Wonder what it tastes like?

Czech Republic School Lunch - Pasta Bake

Source: S.K.

Notes: That pasta looks like it would be really good. Interesting.

Czech Republic School Lunch - Spinach Soup

Country: Czech Republic

Contents: Spinach soup and pasta with cheese and ham.

Source: S.K.

Notes: "Lunch is always (in every school-primary, secondary, colleges) served on ceramic dishes and with metallic cutlery. There are very strict rules applied on nutritious content of the meals. That's heritage from our socialistic past; when a huge attention was payed on what kids are eating. Most of the kids eat at school canteens (it's convenient and cheaper for their parents). The lunch consists always of a soup and a main course. Then usually there is a sallet, or a fruit (whole piece, not cut) and/or a desert (the desert can be a chocolate bar, or flavoured sweet cheese or a cake). Main courses can be also sweet-for example pancakes or dumplings. In most of the canteens children can choose from at least two main courses (they should select it a few days earlier in the digital system so the ladies know how many meals approximately they should prepare). As for drinks, there is always tea and water with sweet syrup on tap and cacao if sweet buns are for lunch. The costs are donated by the state (I think it's a half of the total cost of one meal), children have to pay an amount according to their age. Children or parents pay for the lunches in advance, at an office or by a banking transfer. Current prices at one of the schools:

ages:
7 – 10 $1
11 – 14 $1.25
15 and more $1.50

Current average wage in the Czech Republic is about $1100 per month"

USA School Lunch - Chili Dog and Fries

Country: USA

Contents: Chili dog with cheese, French fries, milk.

Source: ?

Notes: I like chili dogs, but yeesh. Also, I think this lack of variety is pretty typical. I'm fine with chili dogs every once in a while, but include some carrot sticks with it, or a side salad.

Stinky Kids

Let's be honest, most kids don't shower after gym class, and that can lead to some pretty smelly kids. Furthermore, some kids may get to school before they realize that they didn't wear deodorant, and now they are stuck at school smelling like an old sock. This got me thinking about the idea of schools keeping something on hand for these situations. Perhaps trial sized deodorants, body sprays, or body wipes. QwikShower Wipes were nice enough to send me a sample of their body wipes, and I think they could be a great possibility. I skipped a shower yesterday, and used one of their wipes, and my wife never noticed. Or at least, she was kind enough to not say anything. What are your thoughts on this? I think it could save a lot of kids some teasing and embarrassment, not to mention the convenience of using a spray or a body wipe.

Also, if you want more information on QwikShower Wipes for your own kids, you can visit them online at http://www.qwikshower.com/. The wipes are 1 for $1, 10 for $7, 50 for $29 and 100 for $49.

Singapore School Lunch - Mushroom Spaghetti

Country: Singapore

Contents: Mushroom spaghetti, chicken chop and potato wedges.

Source: Anonymous

Notes: "As you can see, it's easy to choose an unbalanced meal despite all the healthful choices available. Perhaps the school should consider deploying a food colour police?"

I think a great point is raised here. Just because good food is provided doesn't mean it will be eaten. There also has to be education and support of healthy choices at home.

Singapore School Lunch - Fried Anchovies

Country: Singapore

Contents: Fried anchovies, omelette, cabbage stir-fry with tomato and beansprouts, and chicken chop.

Source: Anonymous

Notes: "In Singapore, the school canteen consists of several stalls selling different types of food, run by different individuals. It's rather like a mini foodcourt. Students are free to purchase anything they fancy. There are national guidelines in place to ensure that the food is healthful. Some schools go the extra mile - they ban deep-fried food and processed meats.

I say all these to explain my husband's hodge-podge lunch. As a hungry visitor, this is what he had:

At the Muslim food stall, he bought a plate of fried rice with three sides - crispy fried anchovies, omelette and cabbage stir-fry with tomato and beansprouts - for $2.

He walked his plate over to the Western food stall, bought Chicken Chop - minus the trimmings - for $1. He notes that the chicken is skinless.

Then, he walked over to the Snack stall and bought 2 pieces of Garlic Bread for $1. The Garlic Bread never made it into the picture."

Singapore School Lunch - Chicken Chop

Country: Singapore

Contents: Chicken Chop with gravy, potato wedges, buttered garlic toast, cucumber slices and a squirt of chilli sauce.

Source: Anonymous

Notes: "This meal was purchased in a primary school for $2 (about USD 1.50). This is an 'upsized' portion. The regular student portion probably has one piece of chicken and cost $1.50 (USD 1.15)."

USA School Lunch - Pizza and Fritos

Country: USA

Contents: Pizza, rice crispy treat, fruit cup, chocolate milk, carrots, ranch, Fritos, celery with peanut butter and raisins (ants on a log), fruit roll up (?), and a mystery item by the pizza.

USA School Lunch - Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes

France School Lunch - Poultry and Potatoes

Country:  France

USA School Breakfast - Yogurt Parfait

Country: USA

Contents: Yogurt, granola (homemade), peaches (mix of canned and fresh), blueberries, apple juice, and low fat milk.

Source: http://betterdcschoolfood.blogspot.com/2010/08/whats-for-breakfast-granola-parfait.html Thanks Ed!

Notes: Look at the awesome success that Ed Bruske has had in making lunches in Washington DC more nutritious! When he first started his campaign, kids were being served packaged Pop-Tarts, muffins and cookies for breakfast.

USA School Lunch - Chips and Corn

Country: USA

Contents: Chips, ground turkey, black beans, banana, corn, and 1% milk.

Source: http://betterdcschoolfood.blogspot.com/2010/08/is-there-enough-corn-on-this-tray.html Thanks Ed!

Notes: Well, let's look at the positives here. The chips are corn chips, which are preferable to most potato chips. There are black beans, which are big in nutrients. The meat is turkey, which is lower in fat. The corn is still on the cob. Bananas are great for you. And finally, the milk is low fat. Baby steps.

USA School Lunch - Fruity Bento

Country: USA

Contents: Grilled cheddar & anjou pear on whole grain sandwich rounds (carrot face with strawberry smile), celery, carrots, dip, blackberries, vanilla yogurt (blueberry/strawberry face), green apples, and strawberries.

Source: Thanks Shannon! http://bentolunch.net/ and http://twitter.com/shannoncarino

Notes: Man, this lunch is loaded with fruits and veggies. I know my son would absolutely devour this, and I think most younger kids would as well, before they become too attached to sugar and fat. Shannon made this for her 4 year old son.

USA School Lunch - Chef Salad

Country: USA

Contents: Layered chef salad (lettuce, thinly sliced cucumber, carrot, grilled chicken, shredded cheddar cheese, boiled egg, two blueberries (just for looks) and tomato slice), homemade blueberry bread, honeydew, and strawberries. Not pictured: container with dressing for the salad.

Source: Thanks Shannon! http://bentolunch.net/ and http://twitter.com/shannoncarino

Notes: These bento style lunches seem to be very popular these days. They are certainly a far cry from the bologna sandwiches and carrot sticks I ate growing up. Perhaps this is something my wife and I will have to try when our kids are old enough for school.

USA School Lunch - Pasta and Fries

Contents: Pasta with cheese sauce, broccoli, salad, chocolate milk, and fries.

UK School Lunch - Vegetarian

USA School Lunch - Soup and Salad

South Korea School Lunch - Rice abd Soup

Kenya School Lunch - Avocado

Country: Kenya

Contents: Avocado

Source: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nyota,_Kenya_02.jpg

Notes: Obviously pretty scant, but certainly nutritious. When malnutrition is so widespread, the fats from the avocado are invaluable. From Wikipedia: About 75% of an avocado's calories come from fat, most of which is monounsaturated fat. Avocados also have 60% more potassium than bananas. They are rich in B vitamins, as well as vitamin E and vitamin K. They have a high fiber content among fruits - including 75% insoluble and 25% soluble fiber.

Deep Fried Butter

That is disgusting! Everyone knows that margarine is much better for you. Obviously not a school lunch, but I still figured you would be interested.
