Various school lunches from around the world. School lunch doesn't really represent the best a country has to offer, but we still love it, because we grew up on it.
Japan School Lunch - Fried Meat
Country: Japan
Contents: Tonkatsu or chicken katsu, cabbage, mayonnaise, hijiki with konyaku (seaweed with devil's tongue--a gelatinous food made from a root), potato salad, hanpen fish cake, macaroni salad
It looks like fried chicken with tonkatsu sauce, which is a sauce similar to tamarind chutney. The black stuff in the upper left looks like maybe seaweed with eggplant. The soup looks like miso soup with tofu.

ReplyDeleteI agree with anonymous. And yeah, the fried stuff is tonkasu and it's either chicken, pork, or fish (though the standard is pork).
