Japan School Lunch - Soup and Salad

Contents: Gobo (burdock root) and carrot salad with tuna, bread with kinako (roasted soybean) powder, and chicken/cabbage soup with noodles.

Notes: I am an American living in Nishi-ku Kobe, Japan and have been volunteering my time with my Japanese friend to give 20-60 min beginners English presentations. Last week I had the pleasure of joining a 4th grade class in Okubo, Japan for lunch.

Contents: Mabo Tofu, fish cake, apple, boiled quail egg, beef w/bean sprouts and rice with salmon.

Japan School Lunch - Rice with Nori

Contents: Rice w/nori (seaweed), hamburgers, fried chicken, the ball looking thing is boiled slimy potato, corn and radish salad and pasta under the hamburgers, and a tomato.

Contents: Bread filled with curry, chicken with a tomato sauce and pasta, omelette, potato salad, green beans, apple, tomato.

Japan School Lunch - Ginger Pork

Japan School Lunch - Hamburger

Notes: I didn't realize the japanese were consumers of processed cheese. You learn something new everyday.

Japan School Lunch - Scotch Egg

Country: Japan

Contents: Curry, boiled veggies with shoyu dressing, and a Scotch egg (hard boiled egg stuffed into a meatball).

Notes: I've never had a Scotch egg, but it's on my food bucket list.

Japan School Lunch - Miso Katsu

Contents: Miso katsu, mini tomatoes, some veggie stir fry, and some soup.

Japan School Lunch - Fried Gyoza

Country: Japan

Contents: Ramen, deep fried gyoza, veggies, and rice-flour bread

Notes: One of the best I've had so far. Gyoza is like a potsticker or dumpling. It's a Chinese dish the Japanese have adopted.

Japan School Lunch - Natto

Country: Japan

Contents: Deep fried squid, tofu and beef stir fry, natto, and egg drop soup.

Notes: Natto is made from fermented soybeans. It has a strong taste and smell, and is slimy.

Contents: Sweet mochi rice with sweet potatoes and black sesame seeds, tofu and seaweed soup, radish and seaweed mixed salad, fried sea bass, and a mandarin orange

Japan School Lunch - Udon Noodles and Fish Sausage

Country: Japan

Contents: Udon, cheese-stuffed chikuwa (fish sausage), frozen Mandarin orange, and milk.
