School Lunches a National Security Threat?

“The retired officers are saying that school lunches have helped make the nation’s young people so fat that fewer of them can meet the military’s physical fitness standards, and recruitment is in jeopardy.”

  1. Ha, military food is no better! Gout is not uncommon. GOUT. Soldiers are getting overweight and malnourished from eating at their own DFACs. Here's a slideshow of the food my husband ate in Afghanistan: http://ronandjana.blogspot.com/2008/07/they-say-that-in-army-food-is-mighty.html

The military has got fewer food standards than schools do. Less said about MREs, the better...

  2. Oh come now, MREs may not be TASTY, but they meet all standard nutritional requirements. That's the entire point of them, you don't want people in the middle of battle screwing up due to lack of proper nutrition.

As for the standard chow hall food...yeah, that stuff's just gross. It was halfway edible when I was 18, but man has it gotten bad in the last three or so years. Don't know if that's because I'm just not 18 any more or what.

  3. MREs are meant to be adequate. If you're not working HARD, they've got enough sodium and fat in them to do terrible, terrible things to your body. And even if you are working that hard every day, a steady diet will, again, do terrible, terrible things to your body. That is why it is illegal most places to give you more than 2 in a day.
